- Make sure to choose a unit size that will allow you access to items that you may not use for awhile.
- Label boxes, make a list of contents of boxes.
- Make sure to choose a 1st quality lock.
- Do not smoke in the storage unit.
- Do not store food in the storage unit.
- To minimize potential water damage, store boxes and furniture off the ground.
- Store mattresses so that they are not in direct contact with concrete.
- Label boxes with fragile items and wrap breakable items in bubble wrap.
- Never assume that your homeowner's or renter's insurance will cover your belongings while they are in storage. Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home or in a safety deposit box, in addition you may want to purchase insurance.
- Appliances should be clean and dry to avoid mold and mildew. Keep doors open, or remove them. You can use the space to store blankets, linens, towels, etc. inside.
